summer fun- leaving to go to a party

Baseball!!

The boys just finished there last baseball game last night.  It has been fun watching the kids get better and enjoy the game more. Zachs team is a funny to watch, they all chase the ball and when they get the ball they throw themselves over it so no one can grab it from them, in the meantime the other team has run all the bases.  It is really quite comical to watch, makes us giggle. They dont fully grasp the concept they are just more excited when they get the ball and dont want to get rid of it! Parker has been getting good, next year is machine pitch in little league so that will be better.  Today and the next three days are record high temps here in Cedar.  Today it was 101 and tomorrow is supposed to be 103, makes us glad we dont live in St. George since they will be at 115 tomorrow! Ouch! We will be fighting the heat hopefully swimming!

Foo Foo

Mom and Dad ate foo foo the other night, thought this was interesting on how it's made:

Spent some time traveling in Africa many years ago and had an excellent dish called foo foo (alt. fufu) in Ivory Coast. Sort of the national dish of Ivory Coast.

The traditional way to make foo foo is to boil cassava and green plantains. They are then pounded together in a large mortar and pestle. The kind you have to stand up to use.

Foo foo is a traditional food that takes a few hours to make any real quantity. I tried to help make it while I was there; using that huge mortar and pestle efficiently is no small thing. I could never get the rhythm or the aim right to be really effective. It truly is a "slow" food that takes a ton of skill to make.

Foo foo is traditionally a side dish served with a spicy stew. It's subtle complex taste and amazing texture is the perfect foil for a spicy rich stew.

The thing is, once you do the pounding, the resulting starch is like nothing I have ever eaten. It is very gelatinous and gooey. Just for a point of reference the texture is a little like mucilage that has dried out too much.

I know that sounds bad, but that is just to give you an idea as to the texture. It is really amazingly delicious.

It is also actually quite difficult to eat for a beginner, because foo foo is traditionally eaten out of a communal bowl and shared by the whole table. It is traditional to eat using only your right hand, no utensils, and it is very hard to tear off a piece from the mass of foo foo in the bowl. At first I made quite a mess of it.

In fact, in Ivory Coast there is even sort of a running joke that white people can't eat foo foo because they can never tear off a bit to eat. You sort of have to snap some off. If you just pull, it will never break and stretches somewhat like chewing gum.

Van just hanging out!

Hard at Work

It has only taken us five years but Danny finally poured our stairs out back, they look so much better! He did a great job.  We are trying to get the other part of the patio poured and the hot tub moved, and a pergola up, I cant wait.  It is fun to be finishing up the back yard.  I will post pictures of what we have been doing when I can take some pictures.  It has been so dang windy here the last week.. Getting kinda sick of it!

Fishing!

We went fishing up to panguitch Monday afternoon in Grandpas boat (it wasn't the same without Grandpa and Grandma) but we had a lot of fun. We caught three cuthroat fish but they were just a little to small to keep.  It was fun fishing out of a boat. On Fathers Day we went for a ride up to kids pond.  The boys fished for a bit but were skunked. We hiked around and just enjoyed the nice weather.
